In 1591, tsarevich (young tsar) Dimitry, who was the grandson of Ivan the Terrible grandson and the heir to the throne of Moscovy, was mysteriously murdered while visiting Uglich. His death had launched Russia into two decades of turmoil and a civil war ("Times of Troubles"). The Church of St. Dmitry-on-the-Blood built on the spot where tsarevich had been murdered reminds us of those violent times.
