Day 1 Melikhovo


The country estate at Melikhovo is located 60 kilometers south of Moscow. From 1892 to 1899, it had its most famous resident: the incomparable writer, Chekhov. It was here that he wrote twenty of his great works, including the famous “The Seagull”. While living in Melikhovo Chekhov built three schools for local children, a fire station, and practiced medicine to help local peasants.

Since 1960 when the celebration rang through of the 100th anniversary of Chekhov’s death, Melikhovo has been open to the public. You will see his study, dining room, and the bedrooms of his family members. Chekhov’s brother and sister were both artists with work displayed throughout the house along with the paintings of prominent Russian painter Isaac Levitan, a family friend.

The estate has a lovely fruit garden, a lilac avenue, and a pond. You can also see the summer house that was originally built for guests but quickly became the writer's refuge and favorite place. This is the garden that inspired one of his most famous plays, "Cherry Garden."

After the excursion to the house guests will visit the beautiful Church of Nativity in nearby Talezh village. Built in the 18th century, it is said that visitors can dip into the church’s holy water to clean themselves of sin.

There is an optional tour of the Monastery of Ascension founded by St. David in 1515. The monastery has recently been restored and is famous for its ornamentation and Russian Orthodox relics.
