About Tashkent

Without a doubt, Tashkent is a diverse city with centuries-old history standing on the ancient Silk Road. Although the city has changed greatly under the Soviet influence, the modern capital of Uzbekistan with dominating skyscrapers has managed to preserve many medieval treasures.

Reasons to travel to Tashkent

Unfortunately, much of Tashkent's traditional architecture was destroyed both during the 1917 revolution and the devastating earthquake of 1966. Among the gems that still stand today and that are must-visits during your Tashkent sightseeing is the historical Barak-Khan Seminary, built in the 16th century. The seminary encompassed a huge library of ancient manuscripts and some parts are available to be seen.

Another sight worth adding on your Tashkent itinerary is the home of the oldest Quran in the world (Quran of Caliph Uthman), the Madrassah's Tila Sheikh Mosque. Located nearby on the city's main square is the caravanserai Kukeldash Madrassah. Built as a Muslim school in 1570, the building served for various purposes from a fortress to housing the Spiritual Board of Muslims.

One more interesting Tashkent experience is a visit to the Chorsu bazaar that was built on the spot which has been a market place since the 13th century. The bazaar offers many goods and souvenirs.

As for delicious treats which you can taste during your Tashkent tour, the traditional Uzbek cuisine dishes are plov or pilaf with rice and meat as well as the local specialty, tandir kabob made in a special oven.
