Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Tashkent is a diverse city with centuries-old history standing on the ancient Silk Road. Although the city has changed greatly under the Soviet influence, the modern capital of Uzbekistan with dominating skyscrapers has managed to preserve many medieval treasures.

Unfortunately much of Tashkent’s traditional architecture was destroyed both by the 1917 revolution and the devastating earthquake of 1966. Among the gems that still stand today are firstly the historical Barak-Khan Seminary built in the 16th century. The seminary encompassed a huge library of ancient manuscripts.

Another sight worth seeing is the home of the oldest Quran in the world (Quran of Caliph Uthman) - the Madrassah's Tila Sheikh Mosque. Located nearby on the city’s main square is the caravanserai Kukeldash Madrassah. Built as a Muslim school in 1570, the building served for various purposes from a fortress to housing the Spiritual Board of Muslims.

One more interesting Tashkent experience is a visit to the Chorsu bazaar that was built on the spot which has been a market place since the 13th century. The bazaar offers many goods and souvenirs.
